(Disclaimer: this is my own yard!)
When we moved in to our home in June 2018, we saw potential all over the yard. An owner from 15-20 years ago was a beautifully accomplished gardener, but other recent owners did next to nothing to keep it up.
This spring, my wife and I took on our own yard and made a significant transformation from a soggy turfed side yard to a water-wise perennial garden, daily filled with pollinators (hummingbirds, bees, butterflies and more!) and a raised herb bed.
Gardening is a deep love of mine and my wife is game for partnering in my attempts to channel Monty Don, so we knew we wanted to bite off something big. Since mid-spring 2019, we’ve turned over nearly 700 square feet in this part of the yard.
We knew we wanted to get rid of turf and wanted something that would bring back some beauty to our corner of the neighborhood in a way that also takes good care of our planet. We’ve loved pollinators and knew that we wanted a colorful and earth-friendly space to enjoy. I love to design and plant and my wife is a master of irrigation, so we make a good team!
Not only do we delight in our side yard each day, but our neighbors thank us on a daily basis (literally!) for the beauty we’ve brought back to our corner of the world.
